The BT Test® and Early Breast Cancer Detection.
1-in-8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Early detection is the key to survivability because when detected and treated in its early stages, breast cancer carries a 97% survival rate - yet, the disease still kills more 40,000 women each year in the U.S. alone.
The current standard of care for early detection of breast cancer continues to be screening mammograms, which Provista Diagnostics fully supports. However, as important as screening mammography is in this effort, the facts remain:
- A screening mammogram’s ability to detect cancer accurately is dependent upon, but not limited to, the type of equipment employed, the experience of the radiologist and technicians involved, the equipment maintainence, and density of the breast tissue all of which lead to subjective results, according to a Group Health study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute
- 20-25 percent of screening mammograms result in false negatives, leaving breast cancer undetected
- Seven percent of screening mammograms result in false positives, potentially leading to unneeded biopsies
Mammography alone does not do enough. The BT Test® is a simple blood test designed to be a cost effective complement to exisitng test methods and procedures for doctors to use in their ongoing efforts to more accurately detect breast cancer in its early stages when life-saving treatment is most effective.
