Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women and men both in the United
States and throughout the world. Lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer as the leading
cause of cancer deaths in women. In the United States alone over 159,000 people are
projected to die from lung cancer in 2010, which is more than the number of deaths from colon and
rectal, breast and prostate cancer combined.
According to the National Cancer Institute, 86% of all people diagnosed with lung cancer die
within 5 years with only about 2% surving if diagnosed with lung cancer that has spread to other areas of the
body.
However, the survival rates for lung cancers diagnosed at the earliest stage are higher with
49% surviving for five years or longer. Early detection is the key to survivability for most cancers but
even more so for lung cancer due to the large number of individuals and families impacted by this devastating disease.
Provista has developed a simple blood test for the early detection of lung cancer called the
"LC Sentinel™ Test. Early clinical performance data on LC Sentienl has demonstrated a sensitivity of 87%, specificity of 95% and
an ROC accuracy of 0.97 for the detection of lung cancer in a combined study of men and women.
This test will be released to the general public in the next few months as a CLIA
Laboratory Developed Test (LDT). For individuals and practitioners interested in finding out more
details about LC Sentinel and its date of availablity, please contact Provista's Customer Service
Department.
